As a little girl, you wanted to emulate your mother or grandmother. Watching them don an apron or change into their cleaning clothes often brought a sense of mystery and wonderment. Before you knew it, you were playing house and wanting to clean everything using the pink feather duster you saw your mom use.
Homemaking to you was like a magical fantasy. Growing up, you yearned for a husband, kids, and a house you could make a home. Visions of old TV shows came wafting in, and soon, they became a faded memory as the day to day mundane reality of life took over.
As you reached the pinnacle of motherhood, you soon realized being a wife and working mom wasn’t exactly what you envisioned it to be. After all, the reality of life as a working mom isn’t as easy as DJ Tanner-Fuller made it out to be.
The reality is, you don’t live in a Netflix sitcom. You don’t have stagehands to make sure everything is in place, the beds are made to perfection, and the cookies you baked for your kids for an afternoon snack came out perfectly golden, looking store-bought.
Our real lives are so far from that. Our toddlers need constant supervision. Our school-aged kids need help with their homework. The dog needs to be walked (because you know your kids aren’t going to do it, even though they promised they would). Your husband’s complaining he’s hungry. You’re exhausted after spending a stressful day at the office, only to now have to get dinner on the table, the moment you walk in the door.
Somethings gotta give.
It’s either your sanity or the ring in the toilet that needs scrubbing.
Your mental health will always win out. Sure you can clean the toilet tomorrow, but before you know it tomorrow comes and goes. You don’t remember the toilet until the ring is so thick and stuck on, you’ll need your husband’s new crowbar to remove it.
It doesn’t matter how old you are; you’re not alone in these feelings of homemaker inadequacies. Even if your kids have grown and are now parents of their own, the exhaustion sweeps in and we feel as though we’re a homemaking failure and just give up.
